The practice of physical therapy dates back to 1921, when Mary McMillan, along with a few other women, founded the first professional association of the field – the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association. The women dedicated to improving rehabilitative initiatives did not allow men to join the association until the 1930s, at which time the name was changed to the American Physiotherapy Association.
In order to become a practicing physical therapist, you must obtain an advanced degree from an accredited institution. As a professional in the field, you will rely heavily on anatomical, biological, and procedural knowledge of exercise and rehabilitation science. A good online degree program, then, will combine hands-on experience with theoretical knowledge. Attending a top program will allow you to learn and apply the very latest treatments, therapies, and procedures. Earning a degree in this field can be extremely challenging, so you must be prepared for the admissions process and initial coursework.
Typically, students will complete three of the four years of their undergraduate degree in exercise or physical science prior to moving on to a program of physical therapy.
As a physical therapist, your work will be physically demanding and very active; you should be able to demonstrate your ability to do this type of work so the desire and intention to become a therapist will be fully understood by the admissions officers. It is helpful, as well, to spend some time talking with current healthcare professionals about the field to prepare you for the professional aspects of this career choice.
