Degrees, Programs

An accounting degree should teach more than just how to “crunch numbers.” A good accounting degree will include ethics courses, and should also include a wide variety of subjects relating to the tax field. Some classes should focus on tax laws and should at least provide an introduction into the legal aspects that can be involved in the accounting field.

An accounting degree can be earned in two years or four years. It is also possible to earn a graduate accounting degree, something which may be required if one’s career goal is that of Certified Professional Accountant.

An accounting degree earned in two years is sometimes referred to as an Associate’s degree. Associate degrees usually require few, if any prerequisite courses, especially the first quarter or semester of college, but may require successful completion of prerequisites as progress is made through the degree program.

Earning an Associate’s accounting degree, then transferring to a four-year accounting degree program is an option, and may be a viable one for those who can only afford to attend college part-time. As long as attention is paid to making sure all courses taken will transfer successfully to another college, there should be no problem.

A four-year accounting degree is usually referred to as a Bachelor’s degree. Again, prerequisites may not be necessary at the very outset, but will likely be needed as the program advances. A graduate accounting degree can only be pursued after successful completion of a four-year program.

Choosing a college or university that offers four-year and graduate courses may be the wisest course of action. It is often possible to plan in advance which courses will be needed throughout the accounting degree process. The plan can be designed to allow for flexibility and change, if need be.
