Education Programs: Online Special Education Degree

Education Programs

Most teachers come to the field with a bachelor’s degree in general education. Sure, some have a specialty such as special education, but often it is a more generalized degree. Sometimes it is a degree in the field they will be teaching in but not in education, and they must continue to take teacher education classes while teaching. I’ve known several teachers who had gone through general education programs before becoming a teacher and were then hired as special education teachers. I think this happens so often because there are so few teachers who are specifically interested in special education. The teachers accepted the job because it was a foot into the world of education and because they hoped to be moved to their area of interest soon.

Some of the teachers in this position find that they absolutely love the challenges and rewards of becoming a special education teacher and decide to further their own education with an online special education degree. Online degrees are much more accessible to teachers who are also trying to work full time in a new field. Even if the teacher has many years of experience, it can still be difficult to incorporate time to go to a classroom each semester. Making an online special education degree appealing to both veteran and new teachers. I think the online degree option is fantastic and used it myself, in a different field.

Have you tried one of the online education programs? What did you think of it?
