Education Programs

Among the many education programs, I explored when considering what master’s degree I wanted to purse was a special education master’s degree. I really enjoyed the special education classes I took to obtain my teaching certificate and even enjoyed the continuing education classes I had taken over the years that focused on the field. Then I realized that I probably didn’t have the patience or the ability to handle large volumes of paperwork that utilizing a special education master’s degree would require.

Don’t get me wrong, I have patience for students all day long. My patience, however, is not quite so expansive as to include parents, other teachers, or administrators who impede my ability to do my job. I saw this so often with my friends who were in special education I knew that I wouldn’t last very long in that position. Ultimately, I decided that I could use a degree in curriculum and instruction to help both my regular and special needs students and I went down that path.

Luckily, even in a master’s program one is allowed to choose electives. Most of my electives were from the special education course work. It is amazing how many of the tactics employed by ‘special needs’ teachers are actually quite helpful to the larger student population!
