Law Enforcement

Law Enforcement

I have a friend who was laid off from his job in construction about two years ago. He wasn’t actually a construction worker he had a job that involved manufacturing rebar, which is something used in the construction of buildings. He had helped build up two companies in two different areas of the country and then the housing market crashed leaving him with nothing but extensive experience in a field that no longer needed him.

While he was drawing his unemployment checks he began looking for work and considering a career in law enforcement. The reasoning was that there are always criminals and it is essentially a recession proof industry. His wife vetoed him becoming a police officer, but was generally agreeable to the other benefits of law enforcement. He eventually decided to pursue an Associates Corrections Degree. He had hopes that this degree would help him land one of the much desired positions in a nearby state prison. After about a year he completed his degree and another opening became available. He had been passed over before but this time was accepted! He believes that his lack of experience is what held him back before and that the Associates Corrections Degree made him more desirable as a corrections officer. Are you a corrections officer? How did you get your first job in the field?
