Law Enforcement
I know when I think of law enforcement I usually think of police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and state troopers. However, recently I’ve had several friends become corrections officers. That is, they work in the state and federal prison system. I suppose the law must be enforced there as well as out in the ‘free’ world, but it doesn’t seem like prison guards really get the recognition they deserve. All of the people I know who work in the prison system have had to go through criminal justice programs in order to obtain their position. This involves training in how to handle different situations that I think most people would find terrifying.
For the most part they all agree that the job is monotonous. Mostly it entails watching prisoners and making sure fighting does not break out. However, when there are problems the training they have received from the criminal justice programs has literally meant the difference between life and death. While this is yet another career path that I would never choose for myself, I have come to greatly admire the men and women who willingly go to work guarding and protecting convicted criminals everyday in an effort to do their part in the world of law enforcement.
Are you interested in becoming a prison guard? What aspects of the job are most intriguing to you?
