Some of the hardest working teachers I know are those who have a special education degree. Out of all the education programs I really think that special education is the most difficult to obtain and the most difficult to practice in the work force. Of course, those that love it would argue that it is easily the most rewarding. Nowhere in a school can one person make such a difference as with special education students.
Sometimes all it takes for a student with special needs to thrive in the school environment is having that one special education teacher who figures our exactly what he needs to make the curriculum click. A notebook, color-coded notes, or someone to read the lessons to him could make all the difference in understanding and feeling completely excluded in the learning process.
Earning a special education degree gives a teacher the tools he or she will need to determine which techniques will help students with specific learning disabilities and how to recognize those disabilities before they become a debilitating force in the student’s education.
However, it does take an extraordinary person to work in special education. Patience, meticulous record keeping, enjoyment (or at least not dread of) paperwork, and a love for teaching are all certainly needed in this profession. Do you think you have what it takes to be a special education teacher?
