Technology Programs

Technology Programs

My husband is a total computer geek. As a matter of fact, when we were in high school, way back before computers were super common, one of our teachers described him as a walking computer because of the way he could instantly figure out what was wrong with one of ‘those’ machines. He also thinks like a computer; very logically. I, on the other hand, was told by our media specialist not to touch the electronics because I kept making them stop working.

After about five years working as a network administrator he decided to go to college to ‘learn’ how to do his job. Yes, he already knew most of what was being taught, but a college degree does look good on a resume. He decided on an information technology degree because those classes most closely mimicked what he was doing in his career field. He looked at other technology programs, ones that give specific training and/or certification but no degree, and also decided to become MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certified.

After going through his technology programs and obtaining an information technology degree, he learned more about his career field and was able to negotiate a raise. For those thinking about getting into the field of computers with no experience, obtaining a degree, certification or both is almost necessary now. Employers want experience along with expertise, so it is harder to start without one unless you have amazing computer skills that are verifiable in some other way.
